Mortal Shell 2 Best Shell: What Cold Symmetry Has Actually Named
Mortal Shell 2 best shell: all eight Shells with unlock rates, the abilities Cold Symmetry has actually named, and the one whose Shell status is unconfirmed.
Last verified
Short answer: for a first playthrough the best Shell is Proxima, the Broodseeker — it is the only Shell with a published traversal ability, and 78% of players have it, which puts it in the early game. The Shell with the most confirmed mechanical depth is Sester Genessa, but she is hidden behind a side quest the developer has never documented.
The more important thing to know before you pick anything: since the Week 1 Update on 29 August, the choice is no longer permanent. Cold Symmetry made Glimpses non-finite and added a respec item. Every “commit to one Shell” guide written before that date is describing an economy that no longer exists.
All eight Shells and what is actually published
Ordered by global unlock rate, which is the closest thing to a published acquisition order. No stats exist for any row — Cold Symmetry has never published Shell health, resolve, or scaling.
| Shell | Unlocked by | Abilities the developer has named | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tiel, the Acolyte | 79.7% | Innate abilities awaken after possession. No named ability. | Gameplay reveal |
| Proxima, the Broodseeker | 78.0% | Hook shot (grapple) and Biosampler | Reveal + Week 1 |
| Eredrim, the Venerable | 56.7% | Shoulder Bash | Reveal + Week 1 |
| Smert | 49.1% | Permanent fight stance, and destroys projectiles while in it | Week 1 |
| Gragu | 48.3% | Carries the Heart of Vatra; has a sheep form | Week 1 |
| Sariel | 35.2% | Nothing. Zero official mentions anywhere. | Community only |
| Sester Genessa | 33.9% | Astral Doubles, a dash plus a corrupted version, and an Intangible upgrade that applies during grab attacks | Week 1 (as “Genessa”) |
| Lazlo | 31.4% | Rekindle | Week 1, indirect |

Why Proxima is the first-playthrough pick
Three published reasons:
- It is the only Shell with a movement ability. The Week 1 notes name Proxima’s hook shot and her Biosampler. A grapple is the one kind of ability whose value does not depend on unpublished damage numbers — it changes which parts of the map you can reach, in an “interconnected open world” the developer sells on exploration.
- 78.0% of players have it. Unlock rate is a proxy for how early something is reachable, and Proxima sits within two points of Tiel. You are not planning a late-game build; you are choosing what to use for most of the run.
- It is new to the sequel. Proxima has no counterpart in Mortal Shell (2020), so nobody can mislead you with a first-game stat sheet, and no returning-player habit transfers wrongly.
Tiel is the reasonable alternative at 79.7% — the most-unlocked Shell, also available in the Open Beta, and a returning name from 2020 where it was the mobile, aggressive archetype. But no retail ability has ever been named for Tiel, so a Tiel recommendation rests on prequel identity and unlock rate alone. Proxima’s rests on a named ability.
Sester Genessa has the deepest confirmed kit
Four published mechanics, more than any other Shell:
- fights alongside astral Doubles (the patch fixes Stray Doubles retargeting);
- has a dash, and a separate corrupted version of it;
- has an upgrade called Intangible;
- and the Week 1 notes state Intangible applies during grab attacks.
That last line is the most valuable Shell fact in either patch. Grabs are normally the attack class you cannot parry your way out of — Urrig, the Executioner has the one attack the developer says outright cannot be parried, and Zmey’s tail grab is an intentional full-health kill in Night Mode. A published intangibility window covering grabs is a direct answer to that category.
The cost is access. Valve hides the “Sester” achievement description, so the requirement is not published, and unlike most Shells her body is not found near Zhirelle, the Shellkeeper. The route below comes from a player-compiled guide, not from Cold Symmetry: in the lower eastern map area, go to the graves, find a red-petal area surrounded by sisters, interact with a floating red orb by the wall, defeat Sister Secunda in the dimension that opens, and bring the censer she drops to Sester Genessa. Treat that as community-sourced. At 33.9% it is one of the two rarest Shells.
She was also the checkpoint NPC in Mortal Shell (2020). Players have noticed; no official statement connects the two.
Smert is the specific-problem pick
Smert is the only Shell described by a stance rather than a cooldown ability: the Week 1 notes call it a “permanent fight stance”, and state it can destroy projectiles while in that stance. That is a stated capability, not an inference from a name.
It matters because ranged pressure is a real problem in this game. The Week 1 Update had to fix Tainted Vestige’s ranged attacks that “no longer miss without reason”, give Vrannic, the Grand Illusionist’s projectiles visible VFX trails, and repair sidearm projectiles choosing the wrong target. If projectiles are what kills you, Smert is the one Shell with a published answer. At 49.1% it is a mid-run acquisition.
Eredrim (56.7%, Shoulder Bash) is the durable archetype returning from 2020, where it had the highest health and lowest stamina. The sequel has no published stats, so “Eredrim is the tank” is prequel context, not a retail fact. Gragu (48.3%) has the strangest published kit — the Heart of Vatra and a sheep form — and comes from a dialogue quest in the bar rather than a body you find, which is community-reported. Lazlo (31.4%) has one named ability, Rekindle, and is the rarest of the eight, which points to a late or optional acquisition.
Be sceptical about Sariel
Sariel appears zero times in every official Cold Symmetry announcement checked. Not in the gameplay reveal, not in Balance Patch 1, not in the Week 1 Update — including the section explicitly headed “Shells”, which names five of the other seven individually.
Its achievement is titled “The Alchemist” and sits at 35.2%. That title hints at a theme and confirms no mechanic. Players report a pain-conversion loop where damage becomes pain and pain heals when you hit something; that is unverified, and this page will not restate it as fact. Even the claim that Sariel is a Shell rests on a player-compiled achievement guide rather than on anything first-party — it is the only one of the eight in that position.
That is not a reason to avoid Sariel. It is a reason to distrust any page that gives you numbers for it.
The Week 1 Update removed the commitment
This is the change that invalidates most existing Shell advice:
- “Glimpses and Tarcores are no longer finite resources, allowing all shells and Tarstones to be upgraded in a single playthrough.” Before 29 August, bonding was a budget you could spend wrong.
- Mether’s Severance is a new Shell respec item, given to Zhirelle, the shell keeper. She severs your bond with a Shell, resets it, and returns every Glimpse you spent. It is sold by Merrick and restocks as you progress.
- Balance Patch 1 already let you buy Shell map locations with Gloom, and refunds the Glimpses in the Shell Keeper’s alcove in Blackmarrow. So finding a specific Shell is a currency problem, not a search problem.
For completion, a community guide states the “Seeking the Past” achievement needs Tier IV bonding on all eight Shells at 27 Glimpses each — 216 total. That is still the amount the achievement asks for. It is no longer a scarcity cap. See reset Shell abilities for the respec mechanics and Gloom farming for the currency.
What no Shell choice can fix
The Week 1 riposte pass is Shell-agnostic and outweighs Shell selection for raw damage: “player riposte damage now scales with enemy health”, invulnerability windows are now consistent between ripostes and last the whole animation, and many recoveries end sooner. That scaling applies whichever Shell you are wearing.
So the honest version of “best Shell” is: pick the Shell whose published ability solves a problem you actually have — reaching places (Proxima), surviving grabs (Genessa), projectiles (Smert) — and get your damage from parries. The best weapon guide covers the same evidence from the weapon side, and beginner combat tips covers the parry inputs.
Do not import Mortal Shell 1 numbers
Harden, Resolve values, Shell health and weapon scaling from the 2020 game are not confirmed Mortal Shell II data. This site labels that material prequel context deliberately. Two Shells from the first game — Harros and Solomon — do not appear in the retail achievement list at all, so the roster itself changed.
What no source establishes
Not published by anyone first-party, and therefore absent from this page:
- health, resolve, damage or scaling for any Shell;
- what Biosampler, Rekindle, Shoulder Bash or the Heart of Vatra numerically do;
- cooldowns, durations or i-frame counts for any Shell ability;
- the acquisition location of Tiel, Proxima, Eredrim, Smert, Sariel or Lazlo;
- the requirement for the hidden “Sester” achievement;
- any ability for Tiel or Sariel;
- a Shell tier list of any kind.
Eight Shells, five with named abilities, one with no official mention, and zero published numbers. That is the whole evidence base — anything more specific that you read elsewhere was either measured by a player who should say so, or invented.
