Mortal Shell 2 Reset Shell Abilities: The Official Respec Item
Mortal Shell 2 Shell resets are now official: Mether's Severance, given to Zhirelle, severs a Shell bond and refunds every Glimpse you spent on it.

If you are searching Mortal Shell 2 reset Shell abilities, there is now an official answer, and it arrived with the Week 1 Update on August 29, 2026: Mether’s Severance. Give it to Zhirelle, the shell keeper, and she severs your bond with a Shell, resetting it and returning every Glimpse you spent on it.
Where to get it
Merrick sells it. The patch says Tarstones and Mether’s Severance can both be bought from him, and that his stock restocks occasionally as you progress. So it is a repeatable purchase rather than a one-per-playthrough item, but it is gated by his restock cycle rather than available on demand.
The change that matters more than the item
The same patch states that “Glimpses and Tarcores are no longer finite resources, allowing all shells and Tarstones to be upgraded in a single playthrough.”
Read those two changes together and the entire reason people searched for a reset mostly disappears. Before August 29, the fear was permanent: a fixed pool of Glimpses meant investing in the wrong Shell cost you something you could never get back. That pool is gone. A reset is now a convenience for trying a different build immediately, not a rescue from a ruined save.
Full details of both changes are on the Week 1 Update notes page.
What the launch-week reports said
Before the patch, the only available answer was player feedback: a public launch review reported that Shell abilities could be reset for free. That report predates Mether’s Severance and was never confirmed by the developers, so this page keeps it as history rather than as a cost table. If you played in launch week and reset something without an item, that is what you were using.
Note that the two are not necessarily the same mechanic. The patch describes Mether’s Severance as severing a bond with a Shell — a full reset of that Shell with a Glimpse refund. Whether individual ability resets remain separately available at no cost is not stated in the patch notes, and this page does not assume it either way.
A reset is still worth planning
Refunds make experiments cheap, not free of effort. Record your current Shell, weapon, fragments, and the encounter you are testing. Change only the abilities connected to one question — survivability, posture pressure, or a weapon interaction — then replay a familiar fight. Changing several things at once turns a build test into guesswork, and no refund gives you that time back.
The official Steam listing confirms eight Shells, each tied to innate abilities, so a reset supports comparison between roles. It does not remove the reason to keep exploring for the Shells you have not found.
