Mortal Shell 2 Shell Abilities: Memories, Bonding and Safe Testing

How Shell abilities, memories and bonding fit together in Mortal Shell II, with a post-launch testing route that avoids claiming unpublished numbers.

Shell progression in Mortal Shell II has three visible tracks: finding the eight playable Shells, watching their Shell Memories and raising a bond at the Shellkeeper. Those tracks are related, but they are not interchangeable.

Shells, memories and bonding are different

Finding a Shell satisfies the collection side of the system. A Shell Memory is a separate story or progression entry, and the achievement Seeking the Past asks for all of them. Bonding is the upgrade relationship tracked by Decked Out, which requires maximum bonding for one Shell.

That distinction matters when a checklist says “finish a Shell.” First identify whether it means finding the body, watching a memory, or increasing the Shellkeeper bond. Treating those as the same objective creates unnecessary backtracking.

A clean ability-testing route

  1. Equip one Shell and keep the same weapon and sidearm for the whole test.
  2. Enter a low-risk encounter where you can observe a normal hit, a guard, a dodge and a riposte.
  3. Test one ability or bond change at a time.
  4. Record the input, the animation, the recovery and whether the enemy can punish the end of the action.
  5. Repeat after a patch before calling the behaviour permanent.

The game’s no-stamina-bar combat makes recovery and positioning especially important. An ability that looks strong in a menu can still be a poor fit if it leaves you in an unsafe animation.

When to change Shells

Change Shells when the current problem is defensive rather than numerical: you cannot read a boss phase, you keep losing a long run on the return route, or a sidearm setup leaves no safe punish window. Do not swap just because another player calls one Shell “best”.

Use the Shell comparison and beginner combat tips pages together. They keep the known eight-Shell structure separate from details that require a direct retail-build test.
