Mortal Shell II's open world, explained from the Gameplay Reveal
Mortal Shell II swaps Fullgrim for a compact, interconnected open world. What the 12-minute Official Gameplay Reveal confirmed about regions, Shells, and fast travel.

On 1 April 2026, Cold Symmetry released the first extensive look at Mortal Shell II — a roughly 12-minute Official Gameplay Reveal. This page collects what that showcase confirmed about the world, separated from the parts still open. It reads the reveal and the Open Beta store text; nothing here is invented.
The biggest change: a real open world
The original Mortal Shell confined you to Fullgrim and its hub-and-spoke branches. The sequel’s headline structural change is a compact, interconnected open world — a genuine departure, not a bigger version of the same layout.
The Open Beta backs this up in practice: it grants the Prologue plus an early section of the open world, so the structure is not just a trailer promise — players have already walked it.
Region variety
The showcase moved through visibly different biomes, including snowy landscapes and arid mountains. That range matters for a series previously defined by one grim, unified palette; it signals the open world is built to feel like distinct places rather than one continuous ruin.
Three Shells, three trails
The reveal put three playable Shells on screen, each described as carving a different trail through the world:
- Tiel, the Acolyte — returning; reads as the mobile, aggressive option. See Tiel.
- Eredrim, the Venerable — returning; the durable tank. See Eredrim.
- Proxima, the Broodseeker — new to the sequel. See Proxima.
These are three of the eight playable Shells Cold Symmetry has confirmed. As in the first game, you come across the bodies of fallen warriors and awaken them.
Fast travel via Shells
One detail from the showcase coverage: Shells were seen opening to reveal what appear to be fast-travel points. We flag the word appear deliberately — the reveal did not spell out the fast-travel system, so treat “Shells double as fast-travel nodes” as a strong read of the footage, not a stated mechanic. It fits an open world that wants quick movement between regions, but we will confirm it against the shipped game.
What is still not confirmed
- The map’s total size and how many regions there are.
- Whether the open world is fully seamless or gated into connected zones.
- How fast travel actually unlocks and works.
- Which of the remaining five Shells appear, and where.
How this fits the launch picture
Mortal Shell II released worldwide on 20 August 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The Open Beta, which ran before release, let players test the Prologue and an early open-world slice — see our Open Beta record — and beta progress did not carry into retail saves.
