Mortal Shell II Open Beta Review: Player Experience, Performance and Reported Issues

A transparent Mortal Shell II Open Beta review based on the current Steam player-review sample: combat feel, performance, crashes, camera issues and Beta scope.

Last verified

This Mortal Shell II Open Beta review is a snapshot of public Steam player feedback checked on August 18, 2026. It is not a retail review and it is not presented as a personal hands-on test. The Beta is an in-development build, so reported performance and bugs may change before the full release.

What the current Steam feedback says

At the time checked, Steam showed 2,472 reviews, with 2,295 positive and 177 negative reviews — approximately 92.8% positive in the displayed sample. This is a Beta reception snapshot, not a Metacritic score and not a forecast of the final user score.

The positive reports commonly describe:

  • smoother combat and dodging than the first Mortal Shell;
  • strong atmosphere, music and visual presentation;
  • responsive combat built around posture, critical strikes and Shell-based playstyles;
  • stable performance for some high-end and mid-range PC setups;
  • enough optional content for players to spend more than the store’s approximate three-hour description.

These are recurring themes in public reviews, not guarantees for every system or player.

Reported issues to watch for

Some Steam players report:

  • crashes during shader compilation or around the first large boss arena;
  • occasional stutter during boss fights;
  • camera lock or camera positioning problems in tight spaces;
  • dungeon trials where enemies did not spawn correctly;
  • movement that some players found floaty or difficult to stop precisely;
  • weapon or progression issues in isolated runs.

Other players report zero crashes, stable frame rates and no stutter. The correct conclusion is that the Beta experience is hardware- and build-dependent, not that one universal performance result applies to everyone.

What the Beta is useful for

The Open Beta is a good way to test four practical questions before buying the full game:

  1. Does the no-stamina combat and posture-break rhythm suit you?
  2. Do dodge, hardening/parry and critical strikes feel responsive on your controller or keyboard?
  3. Does your PC handle the Beta without shader-compilation crashes or unacceptable stutter?
  4. Do the Shell possession and optional-dungeon structure make you want a larger full-game route?

The official Steam page labels the build as in development and says the opening section leads from the Prologue into the first explorable region. It should therefore be treated as a hands-on preview of the combat direction, not a complete review of the retail campaign.

Buying decision before August 20

The Beta reception is encouraging, but the biggest unanswered questions are still retail questions: the final campaign length, complete Shell roster, full weapon catalogue, late-game bosses, launch performance and the final balance of progression systems. Those should be evaluated from the full game and its post-launch Steam feedback.
